AIAM FIGURES SHOW AUTO SECTOR GROWTH IN LOW GEAR
Article Abstract:
The automobile sector experienced a downward trend in sales during April-January 1998-99, according to a report by the Association of Indian Automobiles Manufacturers (AIAM). The commercial vehicle segment showed a drop of 17 percent in sales to 103,625 units. The medium and heavy commercial vehicles (M/HCV)s sales dropped by 19 percent to 58,902 and light commercial vehicle segment by 15 percent to 44,723 units. The passenger car sales also witnessed drop of 5 percent to 325,564 units. The multi-utility segment recorded 19 percent drop in sales to 88,599 units. The exports were also low during the period. The only exception was the two wheeler segment, which recorded a positive growth rate of 10 percent. (um)(psr)

It has rated the Honda City as the most appealing mid-size car and the Tata Safari as the most appealing multi-utility vehicle. The survey was done on car owners who had owned the cars for over one year. Appeal was defined as Automotive Performance, Execution and Layout. (khr)
